Prokofiev’s sumptuous ballet music underscores the struggles of young love amidst violent tragedy like no other representation of Shakespeare’s classic play. Lush, romantic melodies contrast with music of the warring Montagues and Capulets. Edward Berkeley, who triumphed with his adaptation of A Midsummer’s Night Dreamfor the BSO, returns with a new concert adaptation of this love story and will stage direct an ensemble of actors with orchestra.

Presented in association with Folger Theatre.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 9, “Jeunehomme”
    Schumann: Symphony No. 4

A lion of the piano and regular BSO guest soloist since his days as a student at the Peabody Institute, André Watts delights in Mozart’s first mature concerto, a masterpiece of wit and poignancy. Mario Venzago contrasts the elegance of late 18-century French opera with Schumann’s sunlit Symphony No. 4, written shortly after his marriage to Clara.

    Boreyko

    Variations on a Rococo Theme

    Fri, Apr 29, 8 pm

Victoria Borisova-Ollas: The Kingdom of Silence (BSO Premiere)

    Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5

Prokofiev was called to write “a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit,” in the midst of World War II. The triumphant Symphony No. 5 churns with hope and joy in the face of horror. BSO Principal Cello Dariusz Skoraczewski performs Tchaikovsky’s cheerful and demanding cello showpiece, Variations on a Rococo Theme.
