2018 Academy Chamber Program 

Chamber Music Program - Saturday June 23 – Wednesday June 27, 2018

The Academy Chamber Music Program appeals to a wide range of adult musicians with various chamber music backgrounds, seeking a more intensive experience playing alongside a BSO musician who also coaches the ensemble. For all participants, the Academy Chamber Music Program provides adult musicians with opportunities to develop and advance their chamber music skills.

Note: Participation and group assignments are based on enrollment. Every effort is made to include everyone, however if that is not possible, a full refund will be granted.

The Chamber Music Program offers the following:

  • A small ensemble quartet-size or larger with a BSO musician playing and coaching
  • Three 1.5 hour rehearsals
  • A dress rehearsal in the concert space
  • A public performance

Fee: $700

Add-on:
Orchestral Program participants who would like to play chamber music in addition to the components of the Orchestral Program may do so.

PROGRAM ADD-ONS AVAILABLE FOR ACADEMY CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS:

Private Lessons (1 hour)*: Participants take private lessons with BSO faculty members of their choosing to work on solo, chamber, orchestral repertoire, tone, technique or other musical agendas, for an additional fee of $130/hr. After 6/1, lessons will cost $150/hr. Please see the BSO faculty listing for teacher selection. Faculty list coming soon.

*Private lessons are scheduled individually at times that are mutually convenient for the Academy participant & BSO faculty member that do not conflict with provided meals or other Academy activities, and when space is available. Participants may request a preferred time while registering for private lessons after acceptance. However, most private lessons will need to be scheduled on June 23 and 24 due to space availability.

Recital for Solos and Chamber Music With Piano - (Saturday, June 23 – Monday, June 25):  Participants rehearse* and perform a solo piece with pianist and BSO violist Mary Woehr. Up to 2 pre-formed groups with a maximum of 4 instrumentalists will be considered for a maximum performance length of 15 min per group. Each group member must sign up for a 10 min /$50 time slot. (for example, a group with 4 instrumentalists would get 40 min of rehearsal and up to 15 min of performance time)

Soloists should sign up for 10 min. rehearsal + 5 min. performance for $50 or 20 min. rehearsal + up to 10 min. performance for $100.

Additional rehearsal time may be available as a private lesson with Mary Woehr, depending on her schedule. If interested in this option please sign up for a private lesson and select Mary Woehr. Private lessons will be limited to one per person/group.

Participants are encouraged to suggest at least two or three repertoire choices in order of their preference. All repertoire is subject to approval by Mary Woehr.

*Solos and chamber music With Piano rehearsals are scheduled in blocks at times that do not conflict with provided meals or the participant's other Academy activities.

Parking: Purchasing a parking pass is a convenient option for commuters or participants who would like to avoid street parking or high daily parking rates at hotels. The BSO Garage (1311 Cathedral Street) is half a block away from JMSH, and passes cost $4 per day. Transportation is provided between JMSH and Hotel Indigo for the entire Academy Week (June 23 – June 30).

As of 2018, all Academy activities will take place at JMSH and in the surrounding area for the entirety of the Academy Week (Saturday, June 23 through Saturday, June 30). All Orchestral Program rehearsals with the BSO are held at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.


 SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

SCHOLARSHIPS*: For best consideration for an Academy scholarship, applicants must have demonstrated financial need, determined by employment status, education level, and/or filing at or below $35,000 per household based on the prior year's tax return. Applicants must verify income by submitting a tax return. Candidates that belong to historically underrepresented communities in classical music and/or are committed to the work of increasing diversity and inclusion in the arts are also encouraged to apply. Scholarships provided with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE*: A limited amount of support is also available for participants with demonstrated financial need due to extreme circumstances or other financial hardship not described by the criteria which would receive best consideration for an Academy scholarship, and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Financial assistance may also be available to fill program instrumental needs.

REFUND POLICY
BSO Academy Week tuition and fees are non-refundable except in the case of a medical emergency or other extreme circumstance as determined by the BSO Director of Engagement & Education Programs. Approved refunds are only available to Orchestral Program participants. Please note that the $50 application fee is non-refundable. No reduction in fees can be made for late arrival or early departure.
