Originally from Prairie Village, KS, David Sheets joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra bass section in 1996. He previously was the Assistant Principal Bassist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he attained a month into his Sophomore year of undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. In addition to the BSO, Mr. Sheets has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Bergen (Norway) Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been the Principal Bassist of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra since 1999, as well as a frequent soloist and chamber musician.
Mr. Sheets is equally comfortable with improvisation and has performed with musicians such as Jim Hall, Branford Marsalis, and Bobby McFerrin in the jazz idiom with the BSO. In addition, he has played an active role promoting music education in the Baltimore/Washington area with numerous educational performances at area schools over the past decade. He has also taught aspiring orchestral bassists in master class settings at the Peabody Institute as well as in private lessons and section coachings throughout the United States and abroad.
His involvement with the BSO has extended beyond the stage to the Artistic and Players Committees. Mr. Sheets was also involved in the development of the musicians’ website in 2005 in collaboration with his colleagues, which ultimately helped to update and improve the BSO’s online presence.
