Martha Long
Martha Conwell Long joined the Baltimore Symphony as principal flute at the start of the 2024-2025 season. Previously she held the same position with the Oregon Symphony and the Oregon Bach Festival for eight seasons, the San Antonio Symphony for four seasons, and the Fort Collins Symphony in Colorado for three seasons. Martha has appeared as guest principal flute with the Chicago, Baltimore, and Pacific Symphonies and the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. During the summer of 2024, she performed with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, CA.
Martha grew up in North Carolina, where she studied with Brooks de Wetter-Smith and Helen Spielman. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the Colburn School, studying with Jim Walker. Martha continued her studies at the New England Conservatory, completing a Graduate Diploma as a student of Elizabeth Rowe. She is also thankful to Elizabeth Buck, Tim Day, John Heiss, Göran Marcusson, and Cindy Meyers for their instruction and mentorship.
Martha is a dedicated teacher who maintained private studios in San Antonio and Portland. She served as a coach for the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio and the Portland Youth Philharmonic and has taught masterclasses at the Colburn School, Greater Portland Flute Association, Montana Flute Association, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of Oregon, University of Texas at San Antonio, and Washington State University.
Martha plays on Verne Q. Powell flutes and is a Powell Artist.
