Mike Alexander

One-Year Third Horn

Mike Alexander joins the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for the 2024-2025 season as Acting 3rd horn, while on sabbatical from his position as Principal horn of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra.

In addition to his role as principal horn for virtually every ballet and operatic production in Minnesota, Mike regularly plays in Broadway productions from West Side Story to Wicked. He has also performed with a range of notable acts including The Who, Evanescence, Ben Folds, Kristen Chenoweth, The Indigo Girls, Josh Groban, and Weird Al Yankovic.

Alexander has appeared with numerous orchestras throughout the United States, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony, and A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra. He is a regular performer with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra, and can be heard on several recordings with the Minnesota Orchestra, most recently in their cycle of all Gustav Mahler’s Symphonies.

Alexander earned a Bachelor’s degree and Performer’s Certificate from Eastman School of Music in 2011, and a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory in 2014. While attending the Eastman School of Music, Alexander was selected by the faculty as the representative of the Eastman School of Music for a residency at the Kennedy Center as a part of the Conservatory Project Chamber Orchestra lead by composer John Adams.

A passionate educator, Alexander is the Professor of Horn at both “Gustavus Adolphus College” in St. Peter, MN and the “College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University” in St. Joesph, MN.

Alexander’s primary teachers include Jill Pospisil, Peter Kurau, Jason Snider and Mike Gast.
