Season Opening
The BSO’s 2024–25 Season, themed “Music that Resonates,” opens with two spectacular Gala Concerts featuring world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma on September 20 at The Music Center at Strathmore and September 21 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. As the Orchestra’s largest fundraiser of the season, guests can expect surprise moments and special performances by the talented student musicians from BSO OrchKids and the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras (BSYO) under the direction of Music Director Jonathon Heyward.
2024–25 Season Highlights
- Rhapsodic Classics: In November, the BSO features four back-to-back weeks spotlighting jazz greats, including Aaron Diehl Trio, Mikaela Bennett, and a tribute to Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite. The season also includes performances of Wynton Marsalis’ Tuba Concerto and a special tribute to Duke Ellington led by Heyward in Spring 2025.
- Fairytales and Drama: Concertgoers get to experience music’s enchanting ability to weave tales and evoke emotions with performances of Prokofiev Symphony No. 4, Heroes and Heroines where the iconic film scores from The Lord of the Rings to Star Wars are explored, and Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.
- Spiritual Elevation: Performances this season look to uplift the soul in profound and transcendent ways as the Orchestra presents Spirit of the Season: Bach, Corelli and Vivaldi, The Planets with Heyward, and Berg’s Violin Concerto together with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
- Operatic Journey: The finale for the 2024–25 season kicks off a multi-year opera initiative with a stage adaptation of Verdi’s Aida, a tale of love and tragedy set in ancient Egypt. The performance will feature a stellar cast including GRAMMY award-winning soprano Angel Blue and begins a new tradition of closing each of the following three seasons with a different Verdi opera under Heyward’s baton.
- Featured Artists and Conductors: The season features an array of distinguished guest conductors and artists, including Nicholas McGegan, violinists James Ehnes, Gil Shaham, Augustin Hadelich, and pianists Yefim Bronfman and Conrad Tao, among others.
- Composers of Today: The season also intentionally highlights leading composers of today and emerging voices of tomorrow, including ten works by women, including Jessie Montgomery, Hannah Kendall and Anna Clyne, along with pieces by Gabriela Ortiz, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Chen Yi.
- Composer in Residence: This season, the BSO looks forward to a special partnership with 2024–25 Composer in Residence, James Lee III. Commissioned by the BSO, two of Lee’s works will have their world premieres. Additionally, the composer’s residency encompasses an educational component, including student compositions, mentorship, and workshop performances.
- Casual Conversations: As a part of his vision to not only showcase the talent of BSO musicians, Music Director Jonathon Heyward also looks to provide a deeper look into the classical works performed with the return of the Casual Conversations series. Each conversation features fresh perspectives and lively dialogue with Heyward or a guest performer that brings the audience closer to the music and the musicians who bring it to life.
Pops and Specials
Beyond its classical concerts, the BSO welcomes the return of innovative programming such as BSO Fusion and the BSO Pops series, featuring musical mashups and tributes to iconic artists like The Beatles, Radiohead, Cole Porter, and Tina Turner.
Films with Orchestra
Guests can enjoy full-length films on a big screen while the Orchestra performs the score live from the stage. Dive into this seasons’ Films with Orchestra series as it features classics including The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Princess Bride, and Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert.
